Many of the shows have unique Christmas themed presentations. We have visited several of them and haven't seen one that we did not thoroughly enjoy. I invite you to visit one of my vacation blogs to get an idea what our units look like.

(We own ten Smoky Mountain rental villas with cabin like architecture, so if you are not interested in renting for this time, please contact me for availability for other times of year.) *Pet Friendly...see terms below

We have 3 beautiful grand and deluxe villas for rent at a luxury resort in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Sadly, our vacation plans were altered and we will not be able to use all of our villas so we are looking to rent them. These villas are adjoining so if rented together, sleep 12. (Can rent villas separately, but would prefer to rent them together. Each unit slightly different but all beautiful. All villas we own are either grande or deluxe king bed units.) Our villas are located in a beautiful security resort, so no one can get on the resort compound without being checked in through guard station.

A rustic mountain retreat nestled in the heart of the beautiful Smoky Mountains, Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort & Spa sits on 70 acres adjacent to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the largest national park East of the Rockies and the most-visited national park in the United States. In addition, Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort & Spa provides convenient access to both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge attractions such as Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies and Dollywood theme park.
.

Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort is an *Interval International Premier Resort*

The villas are spacious, mountain top, and beautifully appointed. Each villa can accommodate 4 guests comfortably. Available for the specified week, if combined is one Grande Suite / Villa and 2 Deluxe Suites /Villa's. When combined together, the 3 units have one jetted tub and 2 balconies. The villas will be located on the resort in either the 3000 or 4000 buildings which, due to their magnificent location high on the ridge, are considered to be equivalent to Smoky Mountain "penthouse" villas of the property. The panoramic view from that vantage point is nothing short of spectacular! These buildings are also coveted because they are the only 3 of their kind in Gatlinburg and because of Gatlinburg law, no others like them can be built by anyone. They offer elevators which aide in handicap accessibility. The elevator also makes these finely appointed villas more desirable since there are no stairs to lug your suitcases up and down. Checking in and out is a snap! Guests can enjoy the extensive on-site water park, Wild Bear Falls. As a rental guest of an owner, normal fees are waived. This is a huge savings!

More Crafts for Kids: Decorating hot rocks with crayons

Today I want to share another craft for kids that you and your children might enjoy doing together. It is also made with rocks and crayons. Our recent crayon crafting inspired more crayon projects. This time, instead of baking crayons, we baked rocks. It was a fun project in which the children could express their creativity and love for color. Also nice was that each child had something tangible to take away with them to use at home. The rocks make good paper weights, look pretty on a shelf and also make nice teacher gifts or gifts for grandparents, etc.

What you will need:
*crayons (any color will do but sparkly ones look extra pretty)
*clean rocks (best to use rocks that are not too much larger than the palm of your hand)
*a protective work surface-- such as newspapers-- covered with a sheet of aluminum foil
*an oven or microwave
*a good pair of oven mitts or several potholders. (Nice to have a pair for each child but if not, have at least one pair for the adult who is in charge.)

Before I go any further, I want to stress that this is a project that your children definitely need supervision with because of working with hot items.

What to do:
*Make sure all rocks are clean and dry.
*Cover work surface first with sheets of newspaper.
*Cover newspaper with aluminum foil.
Hint:You may want to turn the aluminum foil up around the edges making a little lip
on it to resemble a tray, in case your rock painters are a bit messy.
*Assemble crayons. You will want to choose nice bright colors. Metallic crayons such as silver, gold and bronze look especially pretty.
*Remove paper from crayons.
*If you have them, place a pair of oven mitts beside each child's work surface. If not, let only the adults handle the hot rocks.
**Remember, never leave any child unattended when working with hot items.

Preparing the rocks:
After trial and error, we found the best way to heat rocks is to heat them on a high temperature in the oven until very warm. You want the rocks to be warm all the way through so this will require heating for at least 20 minutes-- if using a conventional oven.
We didn't have as much time as we might have liked, so instead, we heated our rocks in the microwave. (I still think the conventional oven was best but this worked too) We quickly found that it does make a difference in how your finished rock looks if you do not heat your rocks to an extra hot temperature as it effects the way your crayons melt.
If you are using a microwave, heat the rocks until they are very hot.
If a rock is hot enough, the wax from the crayons melts very easily. If the rock is not steaming hot, you can actually draw a picture on the rock in a melted fashion. (Will show an example below)

*This is the time when the ADULT will remove the rocks from the microwave (while wearing padded oven mitts) and place them on the protective surface on top the sheet of aluminum foil.

While supervising your children, use crayons to color the rocks. The crayons should melt easily.
They will melt and run off the side of the rocks and pool on the aluminum foil.
While wearing an oven mitt, you can pick the rock up and move it around a bit to create unique and random designs with the wax. If not, just allow your children to draw & melt the crayons anywhere they like on the rocks. No matter what design they decide on, the finished rocks are quite pretty.

Here is an example of drawing a shape on rocks. This can be achieved when the rock is hot but not so hot that the wax runs off the rock. Experiment with different temperatures for different results.

By allowing the rock's temperature to cool to somewhere between hot and warm, the following pattern
was achieved by one little artist:

This next rock was a bit warmer. The little artist tried to draw on the rock but the wax melted a bit more than planned. This one also looks a bit like a fish to me, yet the artist says it is a turtle. What do you see?

This last rock is perhaps my favorite. It was achieved by heating the rock to an extra hot temperature and applying crayons to it. (Although it is difficult to see, the silver metallic crayon looked especially nice.) Once the wax was on the rock, the rock was tilted from side to side to allow the wax to run and merge with other colors. The result, I believe, is beautiful.
*Remember to wear oven mitts when picking up a hot rock to avoid burning little hands.

*Let rocks dry thoroughly before moving them.

This craft really didn't cost us any extra money. We used some rocks that we had gathered for a previous craft project. We already had crayons, oven mitts, potholders, newspaper and aluminum foil. Everyone had a fantastic time with this craft. Clean up was simple and easy.
Now, I don't know about you but finding a craft that the children love that is basically free, fun and has quick and easy clean-up is a winner in my book.

I hope you can try this project and that you and your family have as much fun with it as mine did.

Recycle old crayons and make new ones. Crafts for kids!

Another Fun Friday, this time with crayons!

We have been doing a lot of crafting with crayons at our house lately. Working with crayons isn't new to the children who frequent my house. Recently, we found a way to recycle those small broken pieces and shavings to make new crayons. The kids had a great time with this fun craft and had some nice new crayons shapes to use afterward.  Perhaps this idea might come in handy for you on a rainy day.

Recycle and use up those broken or worn-down crayons with this one.
Either separate chips by color or mix them up. (Mixing them up is both easier and faster)
Line or fill old muffin tins, bottle caps, candy molds or silicone baking cups with pieces of crayons or crayon shavings. You can use aluminum cupcake liners for a nice effect.  Heat crayons in either an old pan and pour into silicone molds or put the shavings or crayon bits into muffin tins or molds and bake at approximately 170 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes for a shallow pan or at 300 degrees for about 10 to 15 minutes or until melted for a deeper pan. If you use an oven, preheat it before baking. You really need to keep a close eye on the crayons while melting because the shallow pans melted really fast.

Tip* If you use a silicone muffin tin, it is helpful to place it on a hard cookie or baking sheet for stability when baking. This also makes it easier to get out of the oven when crayons are melted and the tray is hot to touch.

Tip*  Use a toothpick to stir the crayons slightly (if you used many colors) when you take them out of the oven to achieve a slightly swirled look.

~Next: cool the pan or silicone baking pan or candy molds in the freezer until hardened. (The silicone pans work really well.)

There you have it! Great new crayons that your kids will love making and using.

*Tip~If you use solid colors and put the crayons into a heart shaped mold, you can pop the heart out and put it on a valentine card. Looks really pretty.

OK Mom's! Here is a tip for you.

I took the paper off of a long crayon and held it over the back of a letter under a lighter flame, allowing a few drops to land on the back of a letter. The result, a pretty wax seal in moments.

Thanks for visiting my blog today.
Have fun crafting with crayons!

The ultimate crochet cardigan sweater. (Perfect for couples)

Most of you who know me well know that I enjoy crocheting. I find it both relaxing and fun. One of my sisters often sends me photos of crochet items she sees that she loves or would like to have. I was recently inspired by one such photo that she sent to me showing the perfect way for most any couple to spend time together. For some of these couples, simply spending time together is not enough. These couples like to share everything: meals, time, and yes, even their clothes. For this type couple, this is the perfect giant two-person cardigan to provide the warmth of a sweater with the comfort of being close to a loved one. What a great accessory item and unique idea!  This picture made me smile. Perhaps, when you see it, you will do the same.

Happy Memorial Day! Celebrate with Red, White and Blue Socks!

Today, we celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Here are a few inspirational quotes I want to share with you on this special day:

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies. -Moina Michael

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself. -Joseph Campbell

And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me. -Lee Greenwood

Today, we honor soldiers who bravely give of themselves to make sure we Americans remain free. There aren't enough ways to say THANK YOU to those brave men and women who have served and who do serve our country. One thing for sure, freedom isn't free! I encourage you to take a moment to honor those who have given their all to serve our country. If you have the opportunity to say thank you, please do. Remember to keep all our soldiers in your prayers.
God Bless America!
